WalMart Launches Healthy Food Initiative

WalMart, the world's largest retailer, announced today that it is launching a five year plan to provide customers with healthier and more affordable food choices. They will lower prices on fruits and vegetables and reduce the amount of trans fats, added sugars and sodium in packaged foods sold under it's house brand, Great Value.

This initiative builds on the recent successes of Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign to end childhood obesity and promote healthy eating. Last month, the President signed into law the Health Hunger-Free Kids Act, a $4.5 billion measure to expand child nutrition programs and improve the quality of school meals nationwide.

WalMart's decision should certainly encourage other retailers to follow suit. Go to http://walmartstores.com/ for more details on this and other healthy eating-related stories.
