Why Do They Want to Throw Dr Andrew Wakefield Under the Bus?

There's a lot of buzz this week regarding Dr Andrew Wakefield and the controversy over the vaccine studies that were published by the BMJ (British Medical Journal). All of the sudden (and mysteriously) some of his supporters have withdrawn their endorsement of the findings regarding thimerosal and autism.

What's to debate?

Some people are stuck on labeling diseases, creating names for new diseases, or just have a jones for 'labeling' in general. Any way you slice it, disease is disease. Illness is illness. Pollution is pollution.

Plain and simple:
• There's no doubt that mercury (Hg) is the #1 most hazardous non-radioactive substance on earth.
• There's no doubt that mercury is a health risk and environmental hazard.

These facts have been acknowledged/reported/confirmed by US EPA, FDA, US Geological Survey and other global agencies and research organizations. Scandinavian countries have long banned the use of mercury dental amalgam. The US trails, even after the December 2010 FDA hearings which were specifically called to address mercury.

Want more? Here's the link to International Hazard Classifications for Mercury (Canada, US, EU):

And a link to a Lab Safety Bulletin from the Chemical Control Centre, University of Windsor:

According to US FDA, "Thimerosal is a preservative that has been used in some vaccines since the 1930's, when it was first introduced by Eli Lilly Company. It is 49.6% mercury by weight and is metabolized or degraded into ethylmercury and thiosalicylate. As a vaccine preservative, thimerosal is used in concentrations of 0.003% to 0.01%.
A vaccine containing 0.01% thimerosal as a preservative contains 50 micrograms of thimerosal per 0.5 ml dose or approximately 25 micrograms of mercury per 0.5 mL dose."

So, the FDA admits to allowing a known, documented hazardous substance and neurotoxin to be injected into unsuspecting citizens. Thimerosal has been around since the 1930's. I find it hard to believe that some pharmaceutical giant somewhere can't come up with a better, safer preservative. So here's more about the many ways thimerosal (mercury) makes you, and the environment, sick....

Thimerosal Toxicology

Thiomersal is very toxic by inhalation, ingestion, and in contact with skin (EC hazard symbol T+), with a danger of cumulative effects. It is also very toxic to aquatic organisms and may cause long-term adverse effects in aquatic environments (EC hazard symbol N). In the body, it is metabolized or degraded to ethylmercury (C2H5Hg+) and thiosalicylate.

Cases have been reported of severe poisoning by accidental exposure or attempted suicide, with some fatalities. Thiomersal rapidly dissociates to release ethylmercury after injection; that the disposition patterns of mercury are similar to those after exposure to equivalent doses of ethylmercury chloride; and that the central nervous system and the kidneys are targets, with lack of motor coordination being a common sign.

Fecal excretion accounts for most of the elimination from the body. Ethylmercury clears from blood with a half-life of about 18 days in adults. Ethylmercury clears from the brain in about 14 days in infant monkeys. Inorganic mercury metabolized from ethylmercury has a much longer clearance, at least 120 days; it appears to be much less toxic than the inorganic mercury produced from mercury vapor, for reasons not yet understood.

Risk assessment for effects on the nervous system have been made by extrapolating from dose-response relationships for methylmercury. Methylmercury and ethylmercury distributes to all body tissues, crossing the blood-brain barrierand the placental barrier, and ethylmercury also moves freely throughout the body.

FACT: All forms of mercury are toxic.

Here's a clip from Annette Fuentes' feature, Eli Lilly and Thimerosal:
"Thimerosal is an organic compound that is 49.6 percent ethylmercury. Eli Lilly and Co., the Indianapolis-based drug giant, developed and registered thimerosal under its trade name Merthiolate in 1929 and began marketing it as an antibacterial, antifungal product. It became the most widely used preservative in vaccines.

Thimerosal cannot be used with live-cell vaccines, such as MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) or polio, because it would kill the vaccine.

The only research looking into the safety of thimerosal was done in 1930 by Eli Lilly-sponsored doctors, who injected it into 22 patients with meningitis. The human experiments failed to prove that thimerosal was nontoxic.

Nonetheless, researchers H.M. Powell and W.A. Jamieson published a study in September 1931 in the American Journal of Hygiene that stated thimerosal had a “low order of toxicity” for humans, without mentioning that the human subjects were ill and subsequently died. Internal Lilly documents from the time, however, revealed that the company’s researchers were worried about Merthiolate’s “burning qualities” when used on the skin.

By 1935, Eli Lilly’s Jameison had further evidence of thimerosal’s toxicity when he received a letter from a researcher who had injected it into dogs and saw severe local reactions, leading him to state: “Merthiolate is unsatisfactory as a preservative for serum intended for use on dogs.”

Here's a not-to-be-missed video featuring Holly Riley, and what she endured and learned through vaccinating her child:

The bottom line:
• The number of cases mentioned in these studies are global, and include the largest populations from underdeveloped regions of the world where famine and malnutrition prevail.

• When the body receives whole food nourishment, pure water and adequate rest and exercise, it is naturally (and is better) able to fend off bacterial and viral infections. Vaccines do not replace a balanced lifestyle, nor should they be accepted as the mode of first line prevention.

• When people self-treat their daily lifestyle needs by optimizing their health choices, the cost of health care will plummet, and allopaths (medical doctors) and surgeons will be free to do what they are trained to do best....save lives -- not over-or-wrongly prescribe pharmaceuticals.

Robert F Kennedy, Jr Explains Vaccines and the Autism Cover Up

Bobby Kennedy, Jr and Joe Scarborough discuss Thimerosal, a preservative used in (childhood) vaccines which is said to cause Autism and many learning disabilities, such as ADD, ADHD, speech delay, hyperactivity and other childhood disorders.  Thimerosal breaks down to release neurotoxic ethyl mercury.  Mercury causes neurotoxicity in humans, especially in fetuses and small infants whose brains are still developing as it is manifested in the central nervous system. See the interview here:

The science that he mentions on the YouTube vid is here:

Thimerosal is a compound that is 49.6% mercury by weight. When pregnant women eat foods or take medicines that contain mercury, the mercury can be transferred to the developing fetus through the placenta. Infants can be exposed to mercury through foods, including breast milk, or medicines. Developing fetuses and young children are more susceptible to mercury exposure than adults because mercury can interfere with the developing nervous system.  More here:

Here's the US CDC 2009 children's vaccine schedule:

That's a lot of mercury.

According to the FDA, "thimerosal has been removed from or reduced to trace amounts in all vaccines routinely recommended for children 6 years of age and younger, with the exception of inactivated influenza vaccine. A preservative-free version of the inactivated influenza vaccine (contains trace amounts of thimerosal) is available in limited supply at this time for use in infants, children and pregnant women. Some vaccines such as Td, which is indicated for older children (≥ 7 years of age) and adults, are also now available in formulations that are free of thimerosal or contain only trace amounts. Vaccines with trace amounts of thimerosal contain 1 microgram or less of mercury per dose."  More here:

Although California, New York and Illinois have banned thimerosal, it is still used in 'trace amounts'. Note that one microgram of mercury has been ruled as a neurotoxin, and 'trace amounts' add up quickly when this quantity of vaccines is administered.

It's in our best interest to become educated about how the body works, what it needs and when, what it doesn't need and why.  Start by listening to your body.

10 Ways Sugar Harms Your Health

Food needn’t even taste all that sweet for it to be loaded with sugar. When it comes to convenience and packaged foods, let the ingredients label be your guide, and be aware that just because something boasts that it is low in carbs or a ‘diet’ food, doesn’t mean it’s free of sugar. How could something so sweet leave such a bitter mark on your health?

1. Sugar causes blood glucose to spike and plummet.

Unstable blood sugar often leads to mood swings, fatigue, headaches and cravings for more sugar. Cravings set the stage for a cycle of addiction, in which every new hit of sugar makes you feel better temporarily, but a few hours later, results in more cravings and hunger. On the flip side, those who avoid sugar often report having little or no cravings for sugary things and feeling emotionally balanced and energized.

2. Sugar increases the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Large-scale studies have shown that the more high-glycemic foods (those that quickly affect blood sugar), including foods containing sugar, a person consumes, the higher his risk for becoming obese and for developing diabetes and heart disease. Emerging research is also suggesting connections between high-glycemic diets and many different forms of cancer.

3. Sugar interferes with immune function.

Research on human subjects is scant, but animal studies have shown that sugar suppresses immune response. More research is needed to understand the exact mechanisms. However, we do know that bacteria and yeast feed on sugar, and when these organisms get out of balance in the body, infections and illness are more likely.

4. A high-sugar diet often results in chromium deficiency.

It’s sort of a catch-22. If you consume a lot of sugar and other refined carbohydrates, you probably don’t get enough of the trace mineral chromium, and one of chromium’s main functions is to help regulate blood sugar. Scientists estimate that 90 percent of Americans don’t get enough chromium. Chromium is found in a variety of animal foods, seafood and plant foods. Refining starches and other carbohydrates rob these foods of their chromium supplies.

5. Sugar accelerates aging.

It even contributes to that telltale sign of aging: sagging skin. Some of the sugar you consume, after hitting your bloodstream, ends up attaching itself to proteins, in a process called glycation. These new molecular structures contribute to the loss of elasticity found in aging body tissues, from your skin to your organs and arteries. The more sugar circulating in your blood, the faster this damage takes hold.

6. Sugar causes tooth decay.

With all the other life-threatening effects of sugar, we sometimes forget the most basic damage it does. When it sits on your teeth, it creates decay more efficiently than any other food substance. For a strong visual reminder, next time the Tooth Fairy visits, try the old tooth-in-a-glass-of-Coke experiment -- the results will surely convince you that sugar isn’t good for your pearly whites.

7. Sugar can cause gum disease, which can lead to heart disease.

Increasing evidence shows that chronic infections, such as those that result from periodontal problems, play a role in the development of coronary artery disease. The most popular theory is that the connection is related to widespread effects from the body’s inflammatory response to infection.

8. Sugar affects behavior and cognition in children.

Though it has been confirmed by millions of parents, most researchers have not been able to show the effect of sugar on children’s behavior. A possible problem with the research is that most of it compared the effects of a sugar-sweetened drink to one containing an artificial sweetener. It may be that kids react to both real sugar and sugar substitutes, therefore showing no differences in behavior.

What about kids’ ability to learn? Between 1979 and 1983, 803 New York City public schools reduced the amount of sucrose (table sugar) and eliminated artificial colors, flavors and two preservatives from school lunches and breakfasts. The diet policy changes were followed by a 15.7 percent increase in a national academic ranking (previously, the greatest improvement ever seen had been 1.7 percent).

9. Sugar increases stress.

When we’re under stress, our stress hormone levels rise. These chemicals are the body’s fight-or-flight emergency crew, sent out to prepare the body for an attack or an escape. These chemicals are also called into action when blood sugar is low. For example, after a blood-sugar spike (say, from eating a piece of birthday cake), there’s a compensatory dive, which causes the body to release stress hormones such as adrenaline, epinephrine and cortisol. One of the main things these hormones do is raise blood sugar, providing the body with a quick energy boost. The problem is, these helpful hormones can make us feel anxious, irritable and shaky.

10. Sugar takes the place of important nutrients.

According to USDA data, people who consume the most sugar have the lowest intakes of essential nutrients -- especially vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, vitamin B-12, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and iron. Ironically, those who consume the most sugar are children and teenagers, the individuals who need these nutrients most.
