What To Do If You're Mercury Poisoned

First, let's ask, "Who ISN'T mercury poisoned?" The answer is, anyone who hasn't drunk water, breathed air, etc. Mercury is the second most hazardous and toxic substance on the planet (plutonium is #1) -- and it's everywhere. Dental offices are known to be the biggest mercury polluters, as they dump amalgam down the drain and into our water source. (The responsible practices have amalgam separators.) There's no cleaning mercury up completely. It's just there...forever. Water washes on shore, so mercury gets into our soil (food source).

Mercury poisoning affects mostly everyone to one degree or another and can have deleterious effects on human health. You may feel fine right now as you read this blog, but people tend to lose their reference of what 'excellent health' feels like when they've been suffering with a slowing degenerative health issue, such as mercury poisoning. One day, you might feel so tired that you must take the day off to rest. The next day, you feel just as tired. And so on. Other symptoms (discussed on a previous blog) may accompany the exhaustion, and the condition continues to build, and develop more symptoms.

There are many ways to help detox the body, but understand that once mercury is in the body (or the land or the water source), it's there forever -- which is why it's IMPERATIVE we ban this substance globally. People notice an almost immediate improvement in health after amalgam removal.

So get those amalgams removed by a holistic or biological dentist well trained in proper amalgam removal procedures.

Cilantro's postulated mechanism of action is to act as a reducing agent changing the charge on the intracellular mercury to a neutral state allowing mercury to diffuse down it's concentration gradient into the connective tissue. This is called connective tissue mercury toxicity. The next step is to remove the mercury from the connective tissue. Mercury is preferentially attracted to the cell wall of the unicellular organism chorella. It can be also bound to sulfhydryl groups in garlic or to sulphur in the form of MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). To get the mercury out, the coriander/yellow dock herbal tincture is one of the best solutions. Also a herbal Milk Thistle combo, cleansing the liver (with nettle), detoxifying the liver and kidneys (milk thistle) purifying the blood (dandelion) boosting the immune system (cat's claw) is a good alternative. Furthermore a Soft Heat infrared sauna for detoxification is recommended. The clinical goal is to convert mercury into a state enabling it to be removed from the cells and be eliminated from the brain, connective tissues, lymph system, liver, gastrointestinal tract, and kidneys.

Another alternative is chelation therapy using chemicals like EDTA which has been available in Canada for several years and has been used to help remove these heavy metals. However, the more natural way would be to use herbal remedies coriander/yellow dock and Milk Thistle combo.

Dr. Omura performed another study in which three amalgams were removed from an individual using all of the precautions available to prevent absorption of the mercury from the amalgam. Even with strong air and water suctioning, water rinses and a rubber dental dam, significant amounts of mercury were later found in the individuals lungs, kidneys, endocrine organs, liver and heart. No mercury was detected in these tissues prior to the date of removal. It is therefore very important that you continue to use the herbal tinctures, Soft Heat infrared sauna or chelatin to detoxifying your body.

LNH suggests you see practitioners who are specifically trained and experienced with mercury removal and proper detoxification procedures. After removal, we do not suggest you attempt to detox on your own, as the body needs to be built up before it's detoxified.

Professor Initiates Hunger Strike to Protest Maltreatment of Mercury-Poisoned Consumers Worldwide

Speak up for the Gandhi of the Mercury-free Dentistry Movement

Professor Servando Pérez – the leader of the mercury-free dentistry movement in Spain and First Vice President of the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry – initiated a hunger strike* last Monday to protest the maltreatment of mercury-poisoned consumers worldwide.

Servando was diagnosed with chronic mercury poisoning two years ago. In a victory for Spanish amalgam-poisoning patients, the highest court in Spain ruled that he was poisoned by his mercury dental fillings and Spain’s public health care system was required to pay for chelation either at its hospital or a private clinic.

His health deteriorating fast, Servando checked into the hospital for treatment. But despite the Spanish judge’s order, the hospital refused to provide him chelation and failed to pay for him to receive treatment at a private clinic. The hospital complains that treating one mercury-poisoned patient would lead to treating all mercury-poisoned patients. Instead, the hospital has been harassing Servando and pressuring him to leave the hospital despite his debilitating illness. The latest tactic is to starve him out: His illness has restricted his diet, but the hospital refuses to accommodate his dietary needs.

With Gandhi-like discipline, this talented young man has refused to leave the hospital without the chelation treatment he is entitled to. Acting on behalf of all of us, Servando has declared that he is going on a hunger strike until he receives much-needed treatment.

Here’s how you can support Servando Pérez and stop this medical abuse now:

Send an email to:
1) Subdirector of the Hospital Santiago de Compostela Dr. Jose-Ramòn Gòmez at
jose.ramon.gomez.fernandez@sergas.es
2) the Head of Health Committee in the Spanish Congress, Gaspar Llamazares at
asistente.sanidad@sgral.congreso.es
3) the Minister of Health of the province of Galicia at
gabinete.sanidade@sergas.es

Tell them:
I support Servando Pérez’s right to receive treatment for dental mercury poisoning. He is entitled to this treatment and he needs it now.

Ask them:
1) Why are you denying a necessary treatment to a critically ill patient?
2) Why is your Spanish health care system harassing a patient in desperate need of treatment for dental mercury poisoning?

Mercury Amalgam Update: "Tip of the Hamburg?"

We now know that Margaret Hamburg had a meeting with staff on the amalgam rule, even though her staff has been writing you form letters falsely claiming she was “not involved.” We now know that Margaret Hamburg was still cashing her Henry Schein stock options two months after becoming Commissioner. We now know Margaret Hamburg’s top press aide George Strait proposes FDA do an “end game” on our movement.

But we only got a fraction of the documents requested under the Freedom of Information Act;

Commissioner Hamburg blotted out or withheld entirely at least 90% of the documents we requested.

So what we know may be only “the tip of the Hamburg.” (Larry Pilot, the experienced FDA lawyer based in Arlington, VA, came up with that great one-liner.)

So ask your Congressman or Congresswoman to write FDA and inquire about the corruption which led to a rule covering up the mercury in amalgam, a rule that breaches last year’s contract FDA signed with us, a rule that boosted up the stock price of Hamburg benefactor Henry Schein, Inc.

e-mailing Congress/faxing Congress /phoning Congress: go to https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml

choose your state, enter your zip, then click “Contact My Representative.”

Talking Points to your Congressman/Congresswoman:

* FDA’s rule conceals the mercury in amalgam from consumers.

* FDA’s rule benefits Commissioner Hamburg’s corporate benefactor, Henry Schein.

* Commissioner Hamburg participated despite claiming that she was recused for ethical reasons, and despite selling off Schein stock options at the same time.

* Dr. Hamburg and her staff are covering up her role in the rule-making.

* FDA proposes to silence critics of the rule via an “end game.”

Additional talking point to Democrat: FDA under Hamburg is a rogue agency defying President Obama’s deep concerns about mercury.

Additional talking point to Republican: FDA under Hamburg is a rogue agency that pulled from its consumer website the warning of neurological harm to children and unborn babies, put there by the Republican Commissioner.

In the battle against FDA, our choice is an end game for mercury fillings -- or an end game for this movement.

Read Haiku to Hamburg … Then Call or Write Sharfstein

A message from Charles G Brown, National Counsel, Consumers for Dental Choice:

Our creative friend Marilynn Block of Portland, Ore., wrote this Haiku to Hamburg, which I re-publish in full:

To: margaret.hamburg@fda.hhs.gov
Subject: Haiku for Hamburg
2 Sep 2009

Haiku poems inspired by your actions and conflict of interest in the recent mercury amalgam ruling.
Leaves turn brown, crumble and fall
The wind carries them away.
Margaret Hamburg

Here's another one, a more modern Haiku:
To Margaret Hamburg,
From the American people.
"You're FIRED!"

--Marilynn Block
I had mouth cancer from the mercury amalgam material you promote as "safe."

--------------------------------------
Fellow Americans and friends around the world: Our great grassroots movement smoked out FDA Commissioner Hamburg. The reason she was hiding the date she recused herself is that there was no such date. So Deputy Commissioner Sharfstein needs to answer:
1) With Dr. Hamburg never formally recusing herself, how could you, Dr. Sharfstein, know he was in charge of the rule-making?
2) On what date did you take charge of the amalgam rule-making?

Please call Deputy Commissioner Sharfstein at 301.796-5040, or write him, JMSharf1@fda.hhs.gov

Friday is the contact day for those in the Eastern and Atlantic time zones. But if you haven’t had the chance to call or write this week, please do so on Friday. Dr Sharfstein needs to be held accountable.

How To Reduce Your Exposure to Bromine

Bromine toxicity is a definite danger from some surprising sources, and it can wreak havoc on your health.  Many of us are regularly exposed to bromine and aren't aware the sources and potential health risks.

Bromines are common endocrine disruptors, and are part of the halide family, a group of elements that includes fluorine, chlorine and iodine. What makes it so dangerous is that it competes for the same receptors that are used to capture iodine.

If you are exposed to a lot of bromine, your body will not hold on to the iodine that it needs. And iodine affects every tissue in your body -- not just your thyroid.

You are already exposed to far too much chlorine and bromine. Bromine can be found in a number of places in your everyday world, including:

  • Pesticides (specifically methyl bromide, used mainly on strawberries, predominantly in California)

  • Plastics, like those used to make computers

  • Bakery goods and some flours often contain a “dough conditioner” called potassium bromate

  • Soft drinks (including Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Sun Drop, Squirt, Fresca and other citrus-flavored sodas), in the form of brominated vegetable oils (BVOs)

  • Medications such as Atrovent Inhaler, Atrovent Nasal Spray, Pro-Banthine (for ulcers), and anesthesia agents

  • Fire retardants (common one is polybromo diphenyl ethers or PBDEs) used in fabrics, carpets, upholstery, and mattresses

  • Bromine-based hot tub and swimming pool treatments

According to van Leeuwen, who has extensively studied the effects of sodium bromide on thyroid function:

“Although the bromide ion is widely distributed in nature, the main route of exposure in man stems from bromide residues in food commodities as a result of the abundant use of bromide-containing pesticides, like methylbromide and ethylene dibromide, for soil fumigation in intensive horticulture and for postharvest treatment.”

One clinical consequence of overexposure to bromine is suppression of your thyroid, leading to hypothyroidism, which will be discussed shortly. Another is bromide toxicity.

Bromine -- The Bully of the Halide Group

When you ingest or absorb bromine, it displaces iodine, and this iodine deficiency leads to an increased risk for cancer of the breast, thyroid gland, ovary and prostate -- cancers that we see at alarmingly high rates today. This phenomenon is significant enough to have been given its own name -- the Bromide Dominance Theory.

Aside from its effects on your endocrine glands, bromine is toxic in and of itself. Bromide builds up in your central nervous system and results in many problems. It is a central nervous system depressant and can trigger a number of psychological symptoms such as acute paranoia and other psychotic symptoms.

In fact, in an audio interview, physician Jorge Flechas reported that, between 1920 and 1960, at least 20 percent of all hospital admissions for “acute paranoid schizophrenia” were a result of ingesting bromine-containing products.

In addition to psychiatric problems, bromine toxicity can manifest as the following:

  • Skin rashes and severe acne

  • Loss of appetite and abdominal pain

  • Fatigue

  • Metallic taste

  • Cardiac arrhythmias

Baby Boomers might recall a popular product from the 1950s called Bromo-Seltzer. These effervescent granules, developed by the Emerson Drug Company of Baltimore, were used to treat heartburn, upset stomach, indigestion, headaches and hangovers.

Bromo-Selzer’s original formula contained 3.2 mEq/teaspoon of sodium bromide -- hence the name. The sedative effect probably explained its popularity as a hangover remedy. Bromides were withdrawn from the American market in 1975 due to their toxicity.

Bromo-Selzer is still on the market but no longer contains bromide.

Bromines in Your Bread Box: Potassium Bromate

The ban on bromines has not prevented them from sneaking into your foods and personal care products.

Nearly every time you eat bread in a restaurant or consume a hamburger or hotdog bun you are consuming bromide as it is commonly used in flours. The use of potassium bromate as an additive to commercial breads and baked goods has been a huge contributor to bromide overload in Western cultures.

Bromated flour is “enriched” with potassium bromate. Commercial baking companies claim it makes the dough more elastic and better able to stand up to bread hooks. However, Pepperidge Farm and other successful companies manage to use only unbromated flour without any of these so-called “structural problems.”

Potassium bromate is also found in some toothpastes and mouthwashes, where it’s added as an antiseptic and astringent. It has been found to cause bleeding and inflammation of gums in people using these products.

Sodium Bromate and BMOs

Mountain Dew, one of the worst beverages you can drink, uses brominated vegetable oil as an emulsifier. Not only that, it contains high fructose corn syrup, sodium benzoate, more than 55 mg of caffeine per 12 ounce can, and Yellow Dye #5 (tartrazine, which has been banned in Norway, Austria and Germany.)

A weapon of mass destruction -- in a can.

Even drinking water can be a source of bromide. When drinking water containing bromide is exposed to ozone, bromate ions are formed, which are powerful oxidizing agents. Such was the case in 2004 when Coca Cola Company had to recall Dasani bottled water.

Sodium bromate can also be found in personal care products such as permanent waves, hair dyes, and textile dyes. Benzalkonium is used as a preservative in some cosmetics.

Finally, bromine and chlorine were the most common toxic elements reportedly found in automobiles, according to the blog of David Brownstein, MD (March 2007). They showed up in the seats, armrests, door trim, shift knobs and other areas of the car.

Think about how much time you spend enclosed in your outgassing Chevy… windows up with no air circulation.

The United States is quite behind in putting an end to the egregious practice of allowing bromine chemicals in your foods. In 1990, the United Kingdom banned bromate in bread. In 1994, Canada did the same. Brazil recently outlawed bromide in flour products.

What’s taking us so long? Why is our government protecting big industry -- instead of protecting us?

Iodine Levels and Cancer Risk

Iodine levels have significantly dropped due to bromine exposure; declining consumption of iodized salt, eggs, fish, and sea vegetables; and soil depletion. In the U.S. population, there was a 50 percent reduction in urinary iodine excretion between 1970 and 1990.

What’s this doing to our country’s health?

The Japanese consume 89 times more iodine than Americans due to their daily consumption of sea vegetables, and they have reduced rates of many chronic diseases, including the lowest rates of cancer in the world. The RDA for iodine in the U.S. is a meager 150 mcg/day, which pales in comparison with the average daily intake of 13800 mcg/day for the Japanese.

There is a large body of evidence suggesting that low cancer rates in Japan are a result of their substantially higher iodine levels. Iodine has documented antioxidant and anti-proliferative properties.

A strong case can be made that your iodine RDA should be closer to what the Japanese consume daily, if breast cancer rates are any indication. Low iodine can lead to fibrocystic breast disease in women (density, lumps and bumps), hyperplasia, and atypical mammary tissue. Such fibrocystic changes in breast tissue have been shown to reverse in the presence of iodine supplementation after 3-4 months.

If you are interested in being tested for iodine deficiency, the urine iodine challenge test is the best way to assess your iodine level.

Bromine and Your Thyroid

Adding to the negative health effects of bromine, the damage to your thyroid health deserves special mention.

As stated in the first part of this article, bromine exposure depletes your body’s iodine by competing with iodine receptors. Iodine is crucial for thyroid function. Without iodine, your thyroid gland would be completely unable to produce thyroid hormone.

Even the names of the different forms of thyroid hormone reflect the number of iodine molecules attached -- T4 has four attached iodine molecules, and T3 (the biologically active form of the hormone) has three--showing what an important part iodine plays in thyroid biochemistry.

Hypothyroidism is far more prevalent than once thought in the U.S. The latest estimates are that 13 million Americans have hypothyroidism, but the actual numbers are probably higher. Some experts claim that 10 to40 percent of Americans have suboptimal thyroid function.

Many of these folks may actually have nothing wrong with their thyroid gland at all -- they may just be suffering from iodine deficiency.

One More Reason to Remove Toxic Mercury Amalgams (Silver Fillings)

Chlorine in Your Baby Carrots

The small cocktail or “baby” carrots you buy are made using the larger crooked or deformed carrots which are put through a machine which cuts and shapes them into cocktail carrots. You might have known that already. But what you might not know is that once the carrots are cut and shaped into cocktail carrots, they are dipped in a solution of water and chlorine in order to preserve them.

When a baby carrot turns white (“white blushing”), this causes the bags of carrots to be pulled from the shelf and thrown away. To prevent this consumer waste, the carrots are dipped in chlorine to prevent the white blushing from happening.

Chlorine is a very well-known carcinogen. Organic growers instead use a citrus based, nontoxic solution called Citrox.

Get ready! Watershed Event in Mercury Fillings History: An Update From Charles G Brown, Nat'l Counsel, Consumers for Dental Choice

Watershed event in history of mercury fillings coming this week

The turning point of our movement comes this week. Because of our landmark lawsuit, the U.S

Food and Drug Administration must now set the ground-rules for the use of mercury fillings, an

action that agency refused to take for 30 years until we filed the case of Moms Against Mercury et

al. v. Von Eschenbach.

Due to our years of work -- your work, my work, this movement’s work -- our moment has arrived.

FDA no longer sits in the hip pocket of the American Dental Association on this issue.  We are going

to get a regulation that moves us to the middle of the playing field.  Don’t get your hopes too high --

neither side will get the victory each seeks.  But the mercury secret -- hidden for years by

manufacturers, the American Dental Association, and the FDA -- will be out this week.

Consumers for Dental Choice has a ten-point plan to try to turn this event into the beginning of the

end of mercury fillings -- we will challenge manufacturers and distributors, insurance companies and

Medicaid agencies, Wall Street and trial lawyers.  If the American Dental Association realizes this is

the end of the road for its 19th-century foundation-stone, fine.  If not, it can fall on its poisonous

sword.

For the past six months, we have executed an aggressive program to keep the issue front-and

center at FDA, via work on Capitol Hill and with the media.  And we challenged the Commissioner

herself.  I wrote two letters of objection to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg about her five

years as a board member of Henry Schein Inc., the colossal dental products distributor.  My

challenge succeeded: Commissioner Hamburg recused herself from participating in the rulemaking!

Remember how desperate things were when we started, in the mid-1990s? Dentists were silenced by

the gag rule… almost all consumers were unaware that “silver fillings” are mainly mercury… the

system was held in place by the Iron Triangle of the ADA, the FDA, and state dental boards.  Two

true visionaries -- one in the East, one in the West -- created Consumers for Dental Choice:  Bob

Jones of Colorado (now Texas) and Sue Ann Taylor of Georgia.  Inspired by Hal Huggins, we began.

In the first phase of our movement, we knocked out the notorious gag rule in state after state --

PennsylvaniaArizonaFloridaCaliforniaOregonIowaAlabamaMaineMinnesota,Connecticut,

and Washington.  This trailblazing work was done by consumer activists like Carol Ward, the late

Maz Levy, and Joyce Van Haaften; lawyers like Jim Turner, Sandy Duffy, Sandy Keech, and Shawn

Khorrami, filmmakers like Sue Ann Taylor; writers like Mark Genrich, dentists like Terry Lee, Andy

Landerman, Milt McIlwain, Mark Breiner, and Ada Frazier; and dental board members like Ron

King and Jessica Saepoff.  Dentists could finally advocate, advise, and advertise mercury-free

dentistry.

The second phase was about informing consumers: we gained fact sheet laws and ensured their

enforcement (often the more difficult task).  In California, we created a political tsunami by shutting

down the dental board, an act that sent shock waves to every other state dental board.  Led

by Anita Vazquez Tibau, advised by consultant Pete Conaty, and chronicled by filmmaker Kelly

Gallagher who is producing a movie about this movement, we had activists like Bill Magavern and

dentists like Ward Eccles on the outside and new dental board members Chet Yokoyama and Kevin

Biggers on the inside.  The Philadelphia fact sheet project was led by Freya Koss; in Maine it was

Pam Anderson; in New Hampshire Rosie Cronin; and in Connecticut Mark Mitchell and media guru

Mike London.  Outstanding lawmakers wrote these laws: Diane Watson of California, Mike Michaud

of Maine, Hal Lynd of New Hampshire, and Blondell Reynolds Brown of Philadelphia

The third phase of our work involved taking on FDA:  With state laws implemented, with the dental

board threat to our dentists fading, with our movement having national respect, we could have real

impact -- and we did.  Attorney Johann Wehrle, at the time a law student, designed a plan to

challenge the agency, first via petitions, then a lawsuit.  In between petitions and lawsuits was the

dramatic September 2006 hearing of the FDA Scientific Advisory Committees where the scientists,

led by Dr. Mike Fleming, voted 17 to 7 that FDA staff was wrong when it said mercury fillings are

safe.  After that vote, Dr. Rich Fischer led a team of scientists to urge FDA staff to change their

position.  All along, our friends in Congress, led by Diane Watson and Dan Burton, were holding

FDA's feet to the fire by insisting that the agency follow the law.

But the inertia continued.  So we filed suit in December 2007 and moved for an injunction in April

2008.  At a hearing in May, Judge Ellen Huvelle ruled that we were entitled to a regulation by FDA

on a date certain, but to no other relief; she ordered the parties into mediation.  At an intense

negotiation session, we insisted on warnings in the interim between then and the classification date.

We got them in the website --- the best advisories issued by any national health agency on dental

mercury’s irreversible damage to children: "Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have

neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetuses."   The overwhelming

and positive worldwide press response made clear that FDA had crossed its own Rubicon on the

mercury amalgam issue.

The plaintiffs in this landmark litigation who stayed the course were Moms Against Mercury (Amy

Carson and Angela Medlin), Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice (Dr. Mark Mitchell),

Oregonians for Life (Mary Starrett), Michael Bender, Senator Karen Johnson, Linda Brocato, Dr. Andy

Landerman, Anita Vazquez Tibau, and of course Consumers for Dental Choice.

We didn’t get this far by ourselves.  We built broad alliances.  Michael Bender of the highly effective

Mercury Policy Project leads the environmentalists; Ed Hogan and Emmitt Carlton reached out to

minority communities; Sandy Duffy recruited civil libertarians; and Sister Valerie Heinonen linked us

to the faith community.  And we have had volunteers who have logged hundreds of hours, such as

Barbara Pierson, Mary Ann Newell, Linda Brocato, Elizabeth Wright, and Karen Burns, to name a

few.

With the FDA rule, we will enter our fourth -- and I firmly believe, final -- phase: the demise of

amalgam fillings.  The momentum is ours.

The key to the upcoming rule, not surprisingly, will be the fine print:  the new Special Controls.

That will tell us if the rule is strong or weak.  My focus is the children: if we can protect boys and

girls, if we can protect the unborn, we have prevented amalgam from going to the most vulnerable.

From there, we can build toward ultimate victory.

If the FDA rule is abysmal -- if it contradicts its own website advisory for children and pregnant

women that we negotiated to settle the lawsuit -- we intend to appeal.  But, first we must see the

rule FDA is unveiling this week.
