Dr Mercola Jump-Starts Our International Campaign

A quick note to say THANK YOU to those that have

donated so far -- we're nearing the halfway point to

our fund-raising goal of $10,000. We particularly would like to express our appreciation to Dr. Joe Mercola of the

well-respected natural health newsletter. As soon as word

of ourinternational project got out, Dr. Mercola offered to

kick off ourcampaign with a generous donation.

As many of you know, Dr. Mercola has long fought to

eliminate mercuryfillings: He has interviewed leading

mercury-free advocates like Charlie Brown, written

compelling articles exposing amalgam in his widely-circulated

newsletter, and marshaled grassroots activists to stand up for

their right to mercury-free dentistry.

If you didn't see the email I sent last week, please read it

below. If you meant to donate and just hadn't gotten around

to it yet, please click here now to contribute. Every little bit

helps in taking this next big step in our mission to abolish

mercury amalgams worldwide.

Thank you, everybody!

Here is my earlier email in case you didn’t see it …

An Important Note from the Board

The following is an urgent note from Sandra Duffy,

president of the board, Consumers for Dental Choice.

Dear fellow consumers,

I am writing to you on behalf of our board to request your help.

In an amazing convergence of circumstances, Consumers for

Dental Choice has applied for and been given an international

platform and a role in negotiating the world-wide phase-out of

mercury amalgam dental fillings.

In June 2010, the nations of the world will gather in Stockholm,

Sweden to begin negotiating a treaty that will determine which

mercury products will be phased-out and when.

The World Dental Federation (representing the American Dental

Association) will be there to lobby hard for a phase-out exception

for dental amalgam.

The United Nations has just granted non-government organization

(NGO) status to Consumers for Dental Choice, which means that we

can participate in the negotiations -- and give dental consumers,

amalgam victims, and parents a strong voice fighting for an end to

amalgam on the world stage.

We have come so far in this movement! The infamous ADA gag rule

is in the dustbins of history. Fact sheet warnings on amalgam exist

for millions of dental patients. We exposed the wrongdoing with the

amalgam classification at the Food and Drug Administration, and

organized the ongoing boycott of amalgam colossus Henry Schein Inc.

Now, FDA is forced to reconsider its abysmal amalgam rule in the wake

of “unprecedented consumer-level pressure.”

In the words of FDA Webview, “No final rule in FDA's modern history, or

perhaps ever, has attracted this kind of organized opposition.”

We have the track record!

And today, we have an opportunity like no other. We can send

Charlie Brown, our National Legal Counsel and primary voice in this

effort for over 10 years, to Stockholm in June to participate in the first

session of the mercury treaty negotiations. Consumers for Dental Choice

will lead an international team of organizations against the continued use

of mercury amalgam.

With so many of our supporters waging their own health battles with

amalgam poisoning, we have been reluctant to request donations from

consumers in the past.

However, our recent UN recognition was unanticipated, and Consumers

for Dental Choice now needs to raise additional funds for the

international travel, the press relations work, and the translation services,

etc. required to seize this opportunity.

So for the first time in the history of Consumers for Dental Choice, we are

turning to you, the consumers in this cause, for financial assistance. We

hope that you will help us reach our goal of $10,000.

Please click here to contribute by PayPal.

Or you can mail a check or money order to: Consumers for Dental Choice, 316 F St., N.E., #210, Washington DC, 20002

Remember: Consumers for Dental Choice is a non-profit organization so all donations are tax deductible.

Partner with us in this historic watershed event. With your help, we can stand up to pro-amalgam dentistry and protect dental consumers all around the world! Thank you for your support.

Sincerely, Sandy

Amalgam Use Declines 46% -- We're Half Way There!

Amalgam use declines 46%

We are halfway there!

The Interstate Mercury Education and Reduction

Clearinghouse reports that amalgam use declined 46%

in just a three-year period, 2004-2007 (the last years

for which authoritative data are available). By contrast,

there was virtually no decline (just 1%) in the period

2001-2004. This clearinghouse -- a consortium of states

which require reporting by all the big manufacturers --

suggests amalgam is continuing to decline after 2007

as awareness of amalgam’s mercury grows.

The great news is that millions of individuals are

no longer subjected to mercury fillings.

The bad news is that not everyone is benefiting equally

from this momentous step forward: The pro-mercury

forces are working hard to shove this neurotoxin into

the bodies of children with disabilities, working families,

and uninformed people who do not know that amalgam

is mercury. The Pennsylvania Dental Association has

singled out children with disabilities as meriting mercury

exposure, going so far as to endorse denying all treatment

to these children unless their parents “consent” to amalgam.

The American Dental Association and the World Dental

Federation advocate using mercury on low-income consumers --

even the pregnant women and children who are most vulnerable

to its neurotoxic effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration

has decided that non-elite populations are not even worthy of

labeling to inform them that amalgam contains mercury.

As we continue fighting these injustices -- boycotting top

amalgam seller Henry Schein Inc., challenging government

officials, approaching insurance companies that give primacy

to amalgam, preparing for the upcoming mercury treaty

negotiations, etc. -- we can take heart that our efforts so far

have contributed to substantial progress since 2004.

Halfway to our goal of no mercury in dentistry, we are winning!

The Power of YOU!

Many bills have recently passed through congress quickly, and many citizens don't know anything about them until after the fact. Some of these bills are poorly written, and worse, infringe on our constitutional rights and freedoms, and don't have our best interests in mind.

"We, the people" are only powerless if we fail to exercise our voices.

We voted our representatives into office with the expectation that they would do what is right for "we, the people".

Just because these poorly written bills 'pass' doesn't mean that they can't be amended or overturned. However, we now must exercise our voices, written and/or verbal, to those who have a vote in Washington, DC.

Become part of the solution by immediately contacting your state and local representatives. Simply google your state representatives to find out when they will be holding meetings in your area. There are more and more of these meetings being held all the time, so become involved!

Below are two invitations I received for upcoming meetings to be held in Orange County, California. The reason I received these invitations is because I signed up on their email list. It's quick and easy.

It's time we all take charge of our freedom and the future of our great nation --- it only takes 5 minutes to google your reps, sign up and send an email with your concerns. This isn't about party affiliation --- it's about preserving your freedom and constitutional rights.

I'll be in attendance at these events:

I am holding a community meeting tomorrow night in Aliso Viejo at 6:30 pm and hope to see you there.

We will discuss the "State of our State" including jobs, and ways in which we can get California back on track.

Details:

April 8 - 6:30 pm - Aliso Viejo Conference Center, Ballroom B - 31 Santa Barbara Drive, Aliso Viejo

Please note that due to a scheduling conflict with the community center, a meeting in Oceanside will be held at a later date.

Please visit my website for more information at: www.assembly.ca.gov/harkey

We’d appreciate an RSVP to any of the meetings at (949) 347-7301, but feel free to drop by.

I hope to see you there.
